Presentation

Dear Future COV4 Participants,

I am pleased to introduce the Second Circular of the forthcoming Cities on Volcanoes conference, to be held in Quito Ecuador in January 2006. This is the fourth meeting of COV, which is now a leading forum where volcanologists, city planners, authorities and businesses can meet and discuss the effects of volcanic eruptions on society, infrastructure and human and economic development, and ways to mitigate these effects.

Only a few months have past since the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster. This sad event illustrated in a horrible way how important it is to be well-informed and well-prepared before Nature strikes. This is the main mission of COV and I am sure that the 2006 Quito meeting will be instrumental in reaching these goals.

I hope that all of you will take advantage of the beautiful volcanic setting, which has been affected by the eruptions of 3 volcanoes since 1999. There is much to learn from these eruptions in Ecuador and, of course, from one another at this forthcoming meeting.

Prof. Oded Navon
President of IAVCEI

Dear COV4 participants:

As Mayor of Quito, capital of the Republic of Ecuador, I am pleased to invite you to our beautiful and historical city, built upon the lower flanks of the very active volcano, Guagua Pichincha. I hope that all of you will learn more about the management of volcanic crises during your stay here and that you will also share your knowledge, so that we are all better prepared for future volcanic awakenings.

Sincerely,

General (r) Paco Moncayo
Mayor of Quito

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We are pleased to have been chosen by the Cities on Volcanoes Commission of IAVCEI to host its fourth meeting in January 2006. This meeting has been preceded by six years of ongoing eruptive activity on three volcanoes in the Ecuadorian Andes, which in many ways has given us incentive to share our volcanoes, the lessons that they have taught us and the solutions which have been applied to ameliorate their impacts. We believe that we have created an interesting program and anticipate that all of you will eagerly participate.

We look forward to seeing you in Quito in January, 2006.

Hugo Yepes A.
Chairman
